Picking, cutting, foraging and digging have been on the menu for staff at Snowshill Manor Restaurant, who are preparing for a weekend of cooking with wild and seasonal delights.
The special seasonal menu features traditional ingredients and dishes you are unlikely to see on the average restaurant menu nowadays.
Fruit, vegetables, berries, nuts and leaves have been gathered in from the Manor’s organically-run garden and the local area. These wild ingredients are being used to make some delicious local and seasonal rarities, which will form part of a three-course lunch menu. Homemade treats such as nettle soup, game casserole, crab apple and quince steamed pudding and cob nut ice cream will be featured.
There will also be the opportunity to meet the team, see some of the ingredients, find out where to source them and pick up some recipe suggestions. And there will be free tastings of the team’s fabulous home-made drinks, chutneys, jellies and jams – including the house speciality apple pickle, which will be on sale.
Catering Manager Toni-Louise Weaver-Flello says: “It’s amazing what delicious food and drink you can make using nature’s free harvest. We love creating these seasonal dishes with fresh ingredients which have travelled less than a mile, in most cases. This really is the ultimate in natural, local and seasonal food!”
Advance booking is not required. Lunch is served 12-2.30pm. Winter admission applies. The shop will be open to help solve some of those Christmas present dilemmas and the garden is open for a post-lunch stroll.
Snowshill is no ordinary manor, as Charles Paget Wade was no ordinary Edwardian gentleman. He created his own mysterious world in the Cotswold stone house, packing it to the rafters – quite literally – with a huge and diverse collection of unlikely treasures. From lowly fire buckets to exquisite ivory carvings, ancient musical instruments to Victorian toys, penny farthing bicycles to complete suits of Japanese armour, there’s something to uncover in every room. The stunning garden, set on the edge of the Cotswolds, is laid out as a series of ‘outdoor rooms’ and run on organic principles.

Snowshill Manor is closed to the public from Monday 1 November 2010 until Thursday 31 March 2011 inclusive.
