WHO’S GETTING WHAT? David Milliband, Theresa May, JD Sports

Former foreign secretary David Miliband pocketed a salary of just over £1m last year as president of the International Rescue Committee, £107,840 more than 2018. The charity, which aims to alleviate poverty worldwide, receives around £50m a year from British taxpayers. Miliband had previously protested against immoral fat cat payments when he ran for the Labour party leadership in 2010, as pointed out in The Mail on Sunday.

Theresa May

Not to be outdone, former prime minister Theresa May earned £136,000 in September for delivering a speech on global responses to the pandemic in Seoul, South Korea. Taking her total for after-dinner talks so far this year to more than £1m. This means that the MP for Maidenhead appears to have surpassed Boris Johnson for after-dinner earning power, says The Times. Since leaving Downing Street May has enjoyed a lucrative set of speaking engagements in at least three different continents.

JD Sports

JD Sports boss, executive chairman Peter Cowgill, made a well-timed sale of £19.2m-worth of shares before the announcement days later of a second lockdown sent the stock plummeting, says the Daily Mail. This is Cowgill's second major sale this year after he sold a quarter of his holding for £13.3m in June. He now owns shares worth around £26.9m. Over the last ten years, he has earned £27.2m at the sportswear retail chain.

Thirty council officials received golden goodbyes of more than £250,000 each in a stampede before laws to curb hefty payoffs took effect, says Jon Ungoed-Thomas in The Mail on Sunday. New laws cap exit payments at £95,000. Before that, around 300 council officials were given payments of over £100,000 in the year to the end of March, while councils in England spent £220m on thousands of departing staff. Dorset council paid out 13.3m in exit payments, with one official collecting almost £1m. Payments were even made to bosses who only swapped councils. Helen Fisher, a director at Haringey Council, was paid £425,513 in 2019/2020, including a payoff of 373,803, only to move to a similar job at Watford Council, where she earned another £98,700 that financial year.
