Thousands of new jobs are being created in Franklin County at a huge Walmart fulfillment center.
The retail giant is building the massive center in South Hampton Township near Shippensburg.
Mike Ross, the president of Franklin County Economic Development said many large corporations that Central Pennsylvania is prime real estate: “It’s the most densely populated region in North America.”
Ross said. “We are within a day’s drive to 50 percent of the North American population.”
Walmart’s new building will be 1.8 million-square-foot fulfillment center.
Ross said: “At one time if somebody said they were building 500 thousand square feet; we were in awe of the size of the building.
He said: “The fulfillment center will be online deliveries, so the things you want online and want to be delivered to your house.”
In addition, Ross says Walmart is building a twin distribution center – equal in size near Greencastle.
Ross continued: “That’s the most visible aspect of economic development taking place on Interstate 81.
Ross estimates these two facilities will bring a substantial number of jobs. We are looking right now at three thousand plus 3500 and those are just a sampling of projects.
“These are skilled positions, above-average wages and these are the folks that have the disposable income to put back into the economy.”
While thousands of new jobs are coming to the area, Ross admits with the labor shortage, filling them might be trickier.
