New York Mayor Eric Adams is giving city workers who were dismissed for refusing to obtain the COVID-19 immunization a second chance if they get vaccinated immediately.

Internal letters sent to unvaccinated ex-employees on Friday, June 17 said that they had a “chance to return to employment if [they] become completely vaccinated.

“The ex-workers have until June 30 to get the first dose and make arrangements for a second dose by Monday, August 15.

In a letter to fired agency workers, Marisa Caggiano, the NYPD’s assistant commissioner for human resources, said: “Once you provide proof of full vaccination (both doses), you will be reinstated to your civil service title at your most recent salary within two weeks of submission of proof of full vaccination, with no change to benefits or break in service.”


Apart from workers of the Department of Education, similar letters were sent to all ex-staff of other government agencies who were fired for breaking vaccination regulations. They will get letters later this summer.

An Adams spokesman confirmed the amnesty period, telling The New York Post the mayor’s “goal has always been vaccination, rather than termination.”

The spokesman said: “Our administration is making a final effort to allow the small number of employees who have been terminated to be rehired so long as they get fully vaccinated.

“We hope that they will join the more than 97 percent of city workers who have already gotten their shot to date. But to be clear, no one will be able to resume work or return to payroll under this policy until they are fully vaccinated.”

Adams fired 1,430 municipal employees in February for failing to be vaccinated, including 914 from the DOE and 36 from the NYPD. The city lay off another 101 personnel in March, including 42 from the DOE but no from the NYPD.

More than 6,000 city employees who requested medical or religious accommodations or exemptions from the vaccine requirement have yet to get a response.
