Transport for London has announced plans to recruit over 100 new apprentices. In a boost to the UK economy, they will welcome applications from youngsters with little or no experience to be trained in a variety of roles. According to information released candidates can expect to be trained in key areas such as Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Engineering.

Many of the roles are being funded by The Transport for London’s education sponsorship program and will end with candidates gaining a formal degree as well as developing lifelong skills. Commercial Manager of TFL Andrew Crawley listed the importance of training the next generation but did warn that it won’t be an easy ride.

Those fortunate enough to be offered a training position will enrol on an initial three-year course but depending on the skills required may find themselves working for five years before completing their apprenticeship.

The job postings already appeared during National Apprenticeship Week (8-14th February) where current employees shared their views on the roles and explained how the offer helped them to secure a permanent job after they had completed their own training.

The Associate Project Manager, Hannah Resnick said, “I’d recommend an apprenticeship to everyone. You get paid to learn and you meet so many like-minded individuals, you’re treated as an equal and never made to feel like you’re just in the role to make the tea!” Notably, in 2018 Hannah Resnick joined Transport for London as an apprentice.

Hannah further added that the opportunity she received after joining as an apprentice helped her to take on placements internally. Currently, Hannah is listed as an Associate Project Manager within TFL. Liam Ballantine, who joined the business as an Engineering apprentice has now been promoted to Assistant Project Engineer. He also explained how his work experience helped him to grab his position within the business. Chief People Officer, Trical Wright said that Transport for London gives the scope for candidates from different backgrounds to join as an apprentice which creates opportunities to work and learn.
