Matt Davis, 19, is among 28 top pilots who will be taking part in the Targett 15-metre national gliding championships at Bristol & Glos gliding club at Nympsfield from July 3-11.
Matt, who was awarded a trophy at the British Gliding Association annual conference  this year as the most promising Junior, will have his father, former World champion Andy Davis, of Uley, Glos, as his crewman. After receiving the trophy, Matt went on a junior team development course at Cerdanya, Spain, in April.
He is one of five local pilots among those taking part in the contest from the airfield near Nympsfield. The other pilots come from all over Britain. The locals are Trevor Stuart, of Cheltenham, Graham Morris, of Yate, Nick Wall, of Minchinhampton, and Russ Francis, of Cam, Dursley.
The contest, sponsored by Targett Aviation, based at the gliding club, will be run by a team of local members directed by Tim Macfadyen, of Woodchester, near Stroud. The competitors will be briefed each day on the weather and given tasks which will take them all over southern England and hopefully back to Nympsfield. If they have to land out, they each have a crew who will fetch them home by road or sometimes they can get a launch at another airfield and fly home.
The field will be competing for bespoke trophies made and donated by EADS, the Airbus company – something for the desk at work or trophy cabinet.
