Spanish company Sanjo plans $3.2 million expansion in Virginia Beach with 40 new jobs

A Spanish metal-stamping company is planning an expansion to expand its North American headquarters in Virginia Beach, bringing more Spanish companies to the Hampton Roads region.

The Virginia Beach municipal authorities say Sanjo, a manufacturing company with headquarters in Barcelona, intends to invest more than $3.2 million in the city to increase its presence.

The move will create 40 jobs with an average annual salary of $60,000 to $70,000.

Sanjo looked at moving to Florida or Tennessee before selecting to remain in Virginia.

Virginia Beach Economic Development Director Taylor Adams confirmed the plan at a Virginia Beach Development Authority meeting earlier this week.

Sanjo's manufacturing facility in Virginia Beach will expand by more than 23,000 square feet, more than doubling its current 27,000 square feet of area.

The Virginia Beach-based Miller Group will be building the extension, and they aim to have it done by March or April.

Sanjo leaders spoke with Virginia Beach development officials before making the decision, Jorge Pallas, plant manager, said: “They convinced us to stay in Virginia."

Additionally, Virginia Beach intends to invest $350,000 in the project through its Economic Development Investment Program.

At their meeting on Tuesday, the development authority members authorized the spending. The Virginian Pilot saw the meeting's internet video footage.

Vice Mayor of Virginia Beach Rosemary Wilson mentioned at the meeting she had flown to Barcelona with economic development officials to speak with executives of the Sanjo and other European enterprises.
