Osbit expands US footprint to meet demand in growing offshore wind industry

Wind farm creates 3,000 green jobs

Northumberland engineering firm Osbit has expanded into the US to take advantage of the expanding offshore wind industry there.

The Yorkshire-based Venterra Group recently acquired the company, a developer of offshore wind technology, last October.

Since then it has experienced massive growth, boosting its employees by more than a third across its two North East headquarters.

Now the company has expanded its US footmark, adding to its Port of Blyth and Riding Mill locations and tenancy at OrbisEnergy in Lowestoft, to meet demand.

The company, which was founded in 2010, has finished the first phase of its US growth strategy and is now fully operational in Delaware and Rhode Island as Osbit Inc.

The subsidiary was set up to support the business' continued interactions with the local supply chain and local government bodies.

As part of its aspirations, Osbit has also named Dustin Varnell, a current business development colleague, as US national manager to oversee the team's work locally and take advantage of present prospects.

Mr. Varnell is now based in Providence, Rhode Island, a developing offshore wind hub, at a new building Osbit has acquired.

Chris Jones, business development director at Osbit, said: “We have long been excited about the fantastic developments coming in US offshore wind, and the steps we’re now making cement Osbit’s commitment to supporting its growth. Osbit has been supplying offshore equipment to enable blue economy development for over twelve years now and we are really enjoying collaborating with and sharing our expertise with stakeholders across the US industry.”

The company has an office in CIC Providence, which is home to an increasing number of companies specialising in offshore wind.

Osbit is now working on a variety of products to meet the unique requirements of the US wind business.

With the continuous support of Venterra Group, Osbit is now collaborating with many of its other member companies in the US region as it seeks to take the lead in the sector's explosive growth.

Mr. Varnell, Osbit’s new US country manager, added: “Osbit Inc. is in a great position to help solve engineering and construction challenges for US offshore wind. Our unique approach to partnering with local companies and our expertise with a proven track record have put us in a great position to support customers here in the US.”

Osbit received a Queen's Award for Innovation earlier this year. The business also finished in September a sizable subsea trenching machine that will be utilised on offshore wind farm projects.

Over the course of a year, the company designed and constructed the Swordfish for Luxembourg vessel operator Jan De Nul, burying cables in the ocean.
