Neogen Corporation moving ahead with plans for $70m expansion in Lansing to create 100 jobs

Food safety company Neogen is expanding in the city of Lansing - a $70 million move that will create 100 new jobs.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor made the announcement earlier this week as the City Council passed a resolution to finish the worldwide food safety company's brownfield redevelopment plan.

He said: "Neogen has been a fantastic job creator here in Lansing and this proposed investment is another sign of their commitment to our city.

“I am so excited that Neogen continues to choose Lansing to grow their business, invest, and create jobs right here in our community."

The plans include the construction of a three-story manufacturing facility on East Shiawassee Street, close to existing Neogen sites.

The new facility will be 175,000 square feet in size.

It will include modern production and laboratory equipment for testing and releasing new items.

The company's expansion is projected to produce 60 to 100 jobs in Lansing, with wages ranging from $13 to $25 per hour, according to a statement released by Brunswick Group Associate Rachael Collins.

Jerome Hagedorn, Neogen’s vice president of North American Operations, said in a press release: “This city helped build us into the global company we are today, and we are grateful to continue to call Lansing our corporate headquarters as we continue to grow”.

Hagedorn said:  "This expansion is a big step forward for Neogen and our food safety business, and we are excited to take it with the City of Lansing.”

To develop the employment and complete the project, the firm collaborated closely with the Lansing Economic Development Corporation, Lansing Economic Area Partnership, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and Michigan Strategic Fund.

Neogen proposed a $5 million brownfield plan as well as MEDC and Michigan Strategic Fund incentives depending on the number and pay rates of employment produced.

Now that the city has adopted the resolution, the MEDC and the Michigan Strategic Fund must also approve the brownfield plan.
