Grocer Merchants Distributors to create 125 jobs in North Carolina in $35 million expansion

Hickory-based Merchants Distributors has announced a $35 million investment to expand operations in its hometown, generating 125 new jobs.
The wholesale grocery distributor intends to add 250,000 square feet of space to its Caldwell County business.
The state officials confirmed that the new jobs will pay an average annual wage of slightly more than $59,000.

Brian George, CEO of Merchants Distributors said: “Hickory, North Carolina has been our home for over ninety years, and we are excited to support our continued growth with another expansion at our Caldwell County facilities in the city of Hickory.
“As our business continues to grow, demand for perishable products has increased the need for chilled warehouse space to service our customers and communities.”
“North Carolina continues to support business growth and invest in workforce development which makes expanding at this location possible.”
The state economic investment committee authorized expansion incentives.
The committee also approved a Job Development Investment Grant for the project, totaling $1.27 million in state incentives for the expansion.
The local governments will provide an extra $3.7 million in incentives, including $2 million from Caldwell County and $1.7 million from the city of Hickory.
Other sites actively explored for the project were in Georgia and South Carolina.

The firm delivers groceries to retailers across the country, and the current project will significantly increase the amount of cold storage space available at its Hickory facilities.
MDI last announced a big expansion in 2020, which was one of Hickory's largest-ever economic development announcements in terms of investment at the time.
The corporation promised to invest $120 million and generate 111 jobs in Caldwell County at the time.
