Grit vehicle manufacturer Econ creates 50 jobs in North Yorkshire

Grit vehicle manufacturer Econ will expand its North Yorkshire business by developing a new £7 million engineering jobs in Thirsk.

This family-owned company produces more than 85% of the UK's winter road maintenance vehicles, and it bought a 24-acre land in Sowerby, 17 kilometres from Ripon's headquarters.

After completion, this new North Yorkshire base will be landscaped to minimize the impact on the environment. It will accommodate a 31,600 square foot building, with regional offices, workshops, spray booths, brake testing devices, seal spraying, and 20 Between repairs, compound wells and 18 inspection wells.

Developed by Yorkshire-based Triton Construction, it will also provide hard parking spaces for its winter rental fleet. When the site is handed to Econ in Spring 2022, the company has said up to 50 jobs in North Yorkshire.

Jonathan Lupton, Econ Engineering’s operations director, said: “Econ Thirsk marks another major milestone in our 52-year history and one that demonstrates the strength of the company and dominance of the winter roads maintenance vehicles sector. Over the last few years, our winter hire fleet has grown exponentially, and these gritters, which are leased to councils and highways authorities across the UK, will be housed at the new site”.

He added, “Here, during the summer months, they will be serviced and readied for to return to clients in the autumn, ahead of winter setting in because the location of this new site is rural, we are ensuring that its impact on the surrounding area is mitigated by careful landscaping. Solar panels on the roof will also reduce our carbon footprint and running costs.”

Councillor Mark Robson, leader of Hambleton District Council, said: “I am delighted that Econ has chosen Sowerby for its expansion plans, bringing with it 50 jobs. They join a fast-growing group of businesses in the district which chose Hambleton because it offers a great location and connectivity along with the infrastructure needed to succeed.”

Phil Dyer, business development director for Triton, added: “We are pleased to start on-site to deliver this turnkey solution for Econ Engineering for a new state of the art facility.

“With considerable expertise in transport industry construction, we are working alongside Econ to deliver a very specialist facility with civils work to minimise environmental impact.”

In 2019, Econ opened its first satellite engineering hub in Alloa, Scotland, and last year it added a further facility in Cardiff.
