GlobalFoundries wants to buy 800 acres in Saratoga County to build a new facility.

The plot was the last accessible block of land in the Luther Forest Technology Campus, where the semiconductor maker already owns hundreds of acres.

The 1,400-acre Luther Forest business park that borders the towns of Malta and Stillwater, employs 3,000 people.

A company spokesperson said: “We do not have any dates to share at this time, but we are excited to see the process moving ahead.”

The cost of constructing its second factory, Fab 8.2, is estimated to be between $6 billion and $8 billion.

GlobalFoundries’ growth and property purchase are contingent on obtaining state and federal government aid and securing customer support.

The company has been in touch with local elected leaders in the two towns as well as the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors to keep them up to date on its plans.

Developers have been attempting to purchase properties at Luther Forest in recent years, following the construction of GlobalFoundries’ Fab 8 factory there more than a decade ago.

However, severe zoning laws and local politicians’ determination to leave the area open for future GlobalFoundries growth drove those developers to search elsewhere.
