With a bake off, food tastings, and a chance to chew over the bigger issues, staff and students at the University of Gloucestershire are working up an appetite for Fairtrade Fortnight 2012.

Starting on Monday February 27 the University and Students’ Union (SU) are gearing up to join in the Take a Step campaign as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, which continues until Sunday March 11.

The Fairtrade Foundation is calling on people to take a step in the right direction by thinking about what they can do every day during 2012 to make a difference to the lives of farmers in the developing world.

Events at the University of Gloucestershire will be joining others around the country as part of the Fairtrade Fortnight.

Staff and students can sample a range of products from Fairtrade stalls on campus and on Wednesday 29 February there will be a discussion about the meaning of Fairtrade and a chocolate tasting at the Chapel, Francis Close Hall at 5pm.

A Fairtrade quiz, raffle and wine tasting will be taking place at the Francis Close Hall Students’ Union bar on Monday 5 March at 7.30pm. Admission is £2 on the door and all profits will go to the Fairtrade Foundation.

Naomi Guest, Co Environment and Sustainability Executive at the SU, said: “It’s important to get involved to further promote Fairtrade within our University community. I am particularly looking forward to the event on Monday 5 March as there’s a lot going on and many opportunities to get involved as well as prizes to be won.”

The Fairtrade Bake Off competition, held by the Students’ Union, University and Baxter Storey, will be held on Wednesday 7 March. Bakers are invited to bring along their cakes from 10am. Students will be judging cakes throughout the day at the Park Campus Refectory and the winner will receive cake related prizes.

The competition is open to all SU, University and Baxter Storey members of staff who will be hoping to produce the best tasting cake and using as many Fairtrade products as possible.

Fairtrade Stalls will be held through at the week at:

• Park Campus, Elwes Reception, Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 from 12pm to 2pm.

• Francis Close Hall, HC Foyer (opposite Refectory), Wednesday 29 February and Thursday 1 March, 12pm to 2pm.
