The Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury today announced that former Olympian Philip Bayton will take part in the inaugural Cycling Sportive taking place on Sunday 19th August 2012.

Philip took fourth place at the 1972 Olympic Games and is a winner of the Grand Prix de France and was National Critirium Champion in 1982. He raced for the famous TLI Raleigh squad under Peter Post in the 70’s. and has been a professional cyclist for over 15 Years. 

“We are delighted that someone with Philip’s background is participating in the event ‘ said organizer and Rotarian Bill Bennett,
“We currently have 167 entries with 45 taking part in the 100 mile route, 86 for the 60 mile and 35 for the 30 mile”.

It is hoped that around 250 entrants will take part. The event is very much a personal challenge and not a race, it offers a varied ride starting and finishing in the medieval town of Chipping Sodbury.

The route takes participants through some of the prettiest highways and byways and combines some challenging steep climbs with flat and fast sections of the Cotswold Edge.

The Sodbury Sportive is a professionally run cycling event that will attract regular and first time Sportive riders and is set to become an annual feature locally and nationally. In year one Rotary’s aim is to attract 300-400 entrants.

Other Sportives around the UK include; the Cotswold Spring Classic at Cirencester attracting 750 entrants; The Lion Heart at Longleat with around 1200; and the Wiggle Dragon Ride in Wales, the largest UK event with over 4000 cyclists participating.
