The Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury (1) today announced its plan to organise an annual cycling sportive. A sportive offers the chance for people of all cycling abilities to get out and enjoy the countryside and fresh air.

The Sodbury Sportive (2) will have three distances, 30 miles, 60 miles and 100 miles, giving participants the opportunity to choose an enjoyable distance that best suits their ability or challenges them.

Although the event is not a race but more of a challenge, all riders will be timed with each distance set an achievement band of Gold, Silver and Bronze for times relating to age and gender. The challenge is to finish the selected distance and then try to complete this within the best time possible.

“Many riders will not be interested in going as fast as they can but will be out just to take part and to enjoy the day. For these riders the attraction will be the scenic route, good company and the fun of taking part in a major sporting event”, commented organizer and Rotarian Bill Bennett.

“We wanted to create an event that produced a win – win for the people participating, for the local area and the beneficiaries of Rotary. First and foremost we want to create a great event that is enjoyable, challenging, value for money and that leaves cyclists wanting more” continued Bill.

Other Sportives (3) around the UK include; the Cotswold Spring Classic at Cirencester attracting 750 entrants; The Lion Heart at Longleat with around 1200; and the Wiggle Dragon Ride in Wales, the largest UK event with over 4000 cyclists participating.

The Sodbury Sportive is a professionally run cycling event that will attract regular and first time Sportive riders and is set to become an annual feature locally and nationally. In year one Rotary’s aim is to attract 300-400 entrants.
