An annual Migration Survey report by CITB shows that the UK is facing major challenges due to a shortage of migrant workers in the construction industry.

The report shows that forty-one per cent of employers from the sector are looking for workers and that British workers do not have the skills required to fill in. A spokesperson from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) said that they are ready to work with construction companies to assist them with training where required.

Director of Strategy and Policy at CITB, Steve Radley, said, “Construction faces several challenges over the next few years, as Covid has seen more workers leave the country and with a new tighter migration system companies are going to have to hire and train British workers.”

Property developer Rajvir Kalsi from Slough, England, is also concerned about the impact of profit margins; he said, ” Since covid, most of my Polish workers went home or are too worried about catching the virus to turn up for work (sic). I have tried to hire local lads, but their wage demands are far too high whilst their work ethics are far too low.

A few significant steps have already been proposed by the Government, including introducing various apprenticeship schemes and increased access to the unused trainee funding.
