Steve Edwards from Moreton-in-Marsh went all the way to Scotland to complete marathon number 450 in his bid for a world record of running 500 marathons by 2012 in an average time of under 3 hours 20 minutes. Only 50 more races to go!

Marathon Number 450 was the Dumfries Marathon at DG One Leisure Centre, Hoods Loaning, Dumfries, organised by Dumfries Running Club and raced on Sunday 23rd March 2008. Steve, running for the 100 Marathon Club, completed the race in 3 hours, 10 minutes, 26 seconds which was slightly slower than when he last ran this race in 2006, but well inside his world record challenge target time. This time saw him finish 11th overall out of a field of 86 starters and 5th in the Male Veterans Category.

Steve said “Another long round trip. This time 540 miles to the Dumfries Marathon which is held every two years. I ran this in 2006 and did a time of 3.08, so having gone through the halfway point in 1.34 on this one lap course, I thought I was on for a similar time, but alas, running into a strong freezing cold artic headwind for the whole of the last 6 miles took its toll and I finished in 3.10.26. I was still pleased though, its another one well under the target time barrier.”

Steve now has a rest of two weeks but at least the next race is closer to home. It is the Taunton Marathon on Sunday 6th April. This will start the count-down of the last 50 races.

Steve is also getting closer to the 10 Marathons in 10 Days World Record Challenge in May when he will be going for a new world record by attempting to run the fastest ever culmulative time for 10 marathons in 10 days on an accurately measured UK Athletics certified marathon course. Steve is running in this event to raise funds for the Brathay Hall Trust. This challenge will be the subject of a special article but his personal fund raising page is

However before May comes along Steve has Marathon 451 at Taunton on 6th April, then the big one – The Flora London Marathon on 13th April (only one week after Taunton!) and the Rotary Shakespeare Marathon at Stratford-upon-Avon on 27th April. April is a busy running month!
